Taranaki Mountainairs (NBL) landed experienced 35-year old naturalized American forward Marcel Jones (203cm-99kg-85, college: Oregon State) for new season. He joins another USA player Nelson Kirksey who is already in the roster.
It is actually Jones' comeback to Mountain Airs as he has played here last year. He played recently at Al-Ittihad in Bahrain Premier League. In 7 games he averaged impressive 36.1ppg, 20.9rpg, 3.9apg, 1.3spg and 1.3bpg last season. It was a very successful year in his career as he was selected to Asia-Basket.com All-Bahrain League 2nd Team and All-Imports Team. The previous summer Jones played at Mountain Airs where in 16 New Zealand games he had very remarkable stats: 22.7ppg, 12.8rpg, 4.8apg and 1.3spg. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. He can count that season as a very successful as was awarded Australiabasket.com All-New Zealand NBL Forward of the Year, selected to 1st Team and League Player of the Week.
In 2008 Jones was drafted by Iowa Energy (D-League) in fourth round (50th overall).
He attended Oregon State and it will be his 14th (hopefully lucky) season in pro basketball.
Jones is a very experienced player. And here thanks to pro basketball he experienced life in fifteen different countries playing on four different continents. He is familiar with European, Asian, Australian and of course North American leagues. Jones has played previously professionally in Bosnia (HKK Zrinjski HT Mostar), Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo (Prishtina and Bashkimi), Qatar (Al Gharafa), Romania (Pitesti), Saudi Arabia (Al Ittihad), Slovenia (Helios Suns), Syria (Al Wahda), Turkey (Akhisar Bld), United Kingdom, Bahrain (Al-Ahli and Al-Riffa) and New Zealand (Rangers, Jets, Rams, Saints and Huskies).
Among many awards Jones' team was regular season runner-up in Bahrain League in 2019. He received also Asia-Basket.com All-Bahrain League Import Player of the Year award in 2019.
